SMS segment

A standard GSM SMS is 160 characters. Unicode messages often drop to 70 characters per segment.

How to use it

  1. Paste the title, caption, or message you are checking.
  2. Compare the count with the limit you care about.
  3. Watch the remaining characters so you can trim before you publish.

Limits

  • Platforms count emoji, links, and username prefixes in different ways.
  • A rendered search title can still wrap or truncate based on pixel width, not only character count.

Questions

What is the difference between characters and graphemes?

A character here is a UTF-16 code unit as JavaScript stores it. A grapheme is what a reader sees as one symbol, which matters for emoji and some accented letters.

Why show UTF-8 bytes?

SMS segments, some APIs, and file-size budgets care about bytes, not visible letters. Accented characters and emoji use more than one byte.

Are the platform limits official?

They are commonly used working limits, not a guarantee from each platform. Products change their caps. Treat the bars as planning aids.
